Owners of prepaid sim cards to have identities checked

A bill, as proposed by the “Fight against Terrorism” committee of the House of Representatives, to remove the anonymity of prepaid mobile phone sim cards has been passed by the Council of State.

The new measure— to be enforced in the autumn— comes as part of the Michel government’s latest strategy in the fight against terrorism.

Telecom operators assure that the identities of their customers will be only made available to police and intelligence services.
