The Swedish furniture giant Ikea has issued an urgent product recall of its Patrull range of baby safety gates after the company received reports of the gates opening unexpectedly.
They are urging customers who have bought the product to return them to their nearest store as they may have a faulty locking mechanism. It is thought that several complaints have been raised with Ikea after young children have fallen down stairs as a consequence of the problem, leading to a number of babies and toddler requiring medical treatment.
A spokesman for Ikea said in a statement that “An external investigation has revealed that the locking mechanism is not reliable, which poses a threat to small children. This is despite the products having been approved for sale on the basis of tests carried out under the usual guidelines.”
The company apologised and said it had issued the recall as a “precautionary action.” All customers will be given a full refund.
