Opening Date Set For New Schuman Rail Tunnel And Station

Work on the Schuman metro and railway station in Brussels, as well as the new Schuman-Josaphat tunnel, will be completed by the end of the year after nearly eight years of disruption for both rail and road users.

The new tunnel, which goes directly beneath the European Quarter,  will open on 13 December, linking Schuman station with line 26 for Halle-Vilvoorde and providing a direct link to Brussels Airport, as well as to Antwerp, Leuven, Liège and Mechelen.

Both regional and federal governments are hoping that the new link will help reduce the strain on existing services as well as encouraging more people to use public transport to access the Schuman area.

The newly renovated station has new platforms and concessions stands with 21 escalators and 18 lifts for access with the project costing a total of €365 million, plus an additional €266 million spent on doubling the railway tracks between Schuman and Watermaal station.
