The FYRA high speed rail service between Belgium and the Netherlands had a difficult beginning, and after only a few weeks, was banned from the Belgian rail network because of safety concerns. Radio X reporter, Alison Turner, met travelers at Gare du Midi on Wednesday morning (23rd January 2013) who had had a variety of experiences with FYRA.SNCB is the Belgian railway operator, and their spokesman, Bart Crols, had a detailed discussion with Alison about FYRA. They look at alternative travel arrangements, but also the financial ramifications for SNCB in the event of the cancellation of the FYRA contract with suppliers, Ansaldo Breda. And what are the chances of alternative high speed services running between Brussels and London and Paris? Is FYRA “the Ryanair of railway”? And how did Ansaldo Breda win the contract for the provision of this service?
